Getting XP to recognize a new drive/assign drive letter?

Just had a bad bout with a replaced hard drive that I mistakingly
formatted under Windows Vista. Vista locked the drive so that
when I went back to XP, it was unusable.

Thanks to advice on this board, I was able to boot up with a
disc that was able to wipe the drive.

Okay....

So I am back with XP.

Right now MY COMPUTER is not showing the drive. It only
shows my "C" drive but not the new "D" drive.

The new drive is being shown in disk Management as Disk 0

I already ran the Wizard and made it a DYNAMIC DRIVE (or should
I have kept it basic?)

The disk now says it is unallocated

How can I assign it a Drive letter so it is recognized? I tried
right clicking in Disk Management but my only options are
NEW PARTITION and PROPERTIES.

Very much appreciagte the help.

You have to create a partition on it before you can assign a drive letter to it.

Okay, will do that.

When I make the partition I take it that I max out its
size (it will ask me) to correspond with the total size of the disk.

Yes?

Thanks for the help!

You don't have to partition the whole thing. Depending on what you need you can split it up to several partitions.

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.

Click on Disk Management under Storage.

Right click on the unallocated space (presumably the second hard drive) and select "Format..."

If XP, you'll probably want to format it NTFS. Once it's formatted, right click on it and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths..." to assign whatever drive letter you want.
