300Mbps Wireless!?!

So, Belkin announced today their new Pre-N router that they claim can achieve speeds up to 300Mbps. The router looks pretty sweet too.

There is, however, this disclaimer on their site:

Quote:
*NOTE: The standard transmission rate- 150Mbps and 300Mbps - is the physical data rate. Actual date throughput will be lower.

They do list as an "advantage" the ability to stream HD video over the network. If so, that will be pretty sweet.

It will be interesting to see what the real-world tests show when these are finally sold to the public.

Here's a link to the new Belkin products: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatSecti...tion_Id=203894

Re: 300Mbps Wireless!?!

Remember, this is PRE-N. The standards have not been set/ratified yet. Just don't buy into marketing hype just yet...

Re: 300Mbps Wireless!?!

That's true, but if it works it works. Pre-N stuff has been out for well over a year now. You can't always wait forever. It's got WPA2 (AES), the increased range, and increased speeds called for in 802.11n. Perhaps it will be worth waiting, but this is still significantly better than other things currently available.

Re: 300Mbps Wireless!?!

The only problem with the pre stuff is that every manufacturer has their own version of the standard, which leads to incompatibilities with other manufacturers and sometimes with their own products.

Re: 300Mbps Wireless!?!

The one they announced recently is their "draft-n" as they had a Pre-N out quite a while ago. The pre-n did not perform very well compared to the N specs but did beat out most G routers. Other draft-n routers from linksys did not perform well at all while the Netgear one did much better than all G routers but still nowhere near the range or throughput touted in the spec.

Dan
P.S. been reading lots of reviews cuz my current wireless router is flakey and thought i might jump to new tech. Not yet!

Re: 300Mbps Wireless!?!

Dan,

Unless 802.11n standards are set/ratified, everything else is pre-N...
