HTPC to SONY CRT with only S-Video or Composite input

HTPC to SONY 36" CRT TV with only S-Video or Composite input.

Built a HTPC with a FX5200 128 mb video card. Using s-video-to-TV dvd playback is not too bad. However Windows Desktop quality is nearly unreadable. Tried different resolutions without improvement.

Am I expecting too much out of s-video or is anyone seeing good Windows Desktop quality on a TV using s-video?

Thanks

You are expecting too much, IMO.

Don't expect more than the fuzzy image you're getting from the S-cable.

Yep. Don't bother. Basically wasting your time until you can get a digital connection to a digital TV.

To be technical about it, the S-Video cable is capable of passing a 640×480 resolution, which is a lot less than what you're accustomed to using on your monitor — I'm guessing you usually run 1024×768?

At anything above 480 vertical resolution the video output is downsampling your desktop, so things which are one pixel high in the original resolution get mixed with adjacent details. That's all there is.
