DVD data rates - Comparing to tape
I believe I've seen something like this somewhere, but I forgot where.
I am creating an MPEG2 compression spec sheet for work and I need to know if there is a chart that compares video data rates and tape quality.
I use VBR data rates and I stick to a high quality setting. Our 'default' spec is 6Mb/sec (average) with a peak of 8Mb. But this obviously only allows me between 70 and 90 minutes total (when using PCM audio). When Clients want more than that, I have to lower the data rate. Usually we don't like to do anything under 4.5Mb average. I tell the clients that this is comparable to S-VHS.
Anyways, is there a way to compare the following to video stock?
Here are my specs - they are averages per second:
High - 6 Mb
Med High(a) - 5 Mb
Med High(b) - 4.5 Mb
Medium - 4.2 Mb
Med. Low - 3.5 Mb
Low - 3.2 Mb
at what point do the specs become comparable to VHS? Most of my capturing comes from D-Beta, so I can probably say that the 5Mb range is more like Beta SP...
Any ideas?
