Copying audio from DVD to PC?

Is there a way to copy just the audio from a DVD to a PC? What format would it be saved to?

Since you can't actually extract the audio from a DVD, you have to either use a standalone player and run your analog output into your soundcard of choice with your favorite audio recording software (like Steinberg Wavelab), or if you have 2 soundcards (preferably with digital i/o), run your disc on your PC and use one as the output device and the other as the input device - your software application will generally allow you to pick and choose the devices in question, regardless of your default audio output. With digital, make sure that the sample rates match between the 2 cards.

I've done this to create MP3 "talking books" of favorite audio commentaries which I've used for long drives.

Man, I just got slammed and locked for asking this same question a couple weeks ago...
Apparently, even if you own the dvd and still intend on using the audio for your own enjoyment...you're still infringing on copyright laws...

If bread always lands buttered side down...
And a cat always lands on it\'s feet...
What happens when you strap a buttered piece of bread to a cat\'s back?????

IANAL, but the problem is not copyright itself. Since commercial DVDs are encrypted, breaking that encryption to rip the audio or video would be violating the DMCA. Making an analog audio copy is (probably) still OK under fair use.
