Premiere-Specific LD to DVD-R conversion thread
I've been using the same Pinnacle DV-500+ capture system for a while, but upgraded to Premiere 6.5 a while back. I like the setup, as it is easy to use, and gives me decent results from lots of sources.
I'm doing some old LD captures and conversions and finding the right settings for making 16x9 conversions of letterboxed LDs. I've eliminated the interlace flicker (the worst of it) and figured out how to scale the output and flag it for 16x9 encoding in Impression Pro. The source isn't exactly reference, as my LD player is a used Sony MD-333. It has an S-Video output, which looks less noisy than the composite out, so I am capturing that way.
The resulting picture looks pretty good, though I do see some flickering of horizontal lines. The image overall is noisier than a DVD would look, but that is probably as much a factor of the analog nature of LD as anything else. I have managed to reduce somewhat the moire effect with an AE filter in tests, but the video became so soft as to be distracting. Likewise, I can reduce video noise with various effects, though some options tend to look better than others. Overall, I'm almost in favor of using no noise filtering, since using the S-Video output seems to do a pretty good job at taking care of most of that, anyway.
I'm not interested in changing video packages, but I am interested to know if anyone else using Premiere, or even better, Premiere and the 500+, has any inside tips for making the image look better without becoming inordinately soft.
Thanks,
Buzz
