My old burner died, and I've decided against a DVD burner. So I'm just looking for something cheap (I'm assuming most are now anyways). External intrigues me, but I don't have USB 2.0 - how much slower is it going to be with the old USB connection? I'm fine with going into my computer, but I'd just like the choice of switching computers easier with it.

Thanks for any help.

USB 1.1, "Full" speed at 12Mbit/sec, is exactly equal to 10x CD-ROM speeds -- in theory. But in practice you might only get consistent burns at 4x or even 2x.

I would avoid USB if you can't get USB2.0. You can also consider firewire if you have that connection available.

However if you want a new cd-rw there are fairly cheap prices at www.newegg.com, it is a very popular place among the computer crowd to buy equipment. Most of the stuff has free fedex shipping.

Lite-On Black 52X32X52 CD-RW Drive, Model LTR-52327S, OEM
$33 free shipping. They have other models if interested.
