Comcast Cable users...

Have you seen the commercials on TV how they boosted the download speed to 3mbit? I'm pretty sure that's all just marketing since speeds seem to be about the same, though much more reliable from about a half a year ago.

I'm curious if anyone can upload faster than ~30kbps? I have tons of webspace but each server I try to upload to using Smart FTP doesn't go faster than that.

the 3Mb/sec is download speed. i think my uploads area bout 270Kb/sec. that hasn't seemed to change.

Ya, they say they doubled the speed....but I still am capped at 256kbps upload (30KB or so). Download did double to 3mbps though.

I was in the process of switching to Qwest Choice DSL Deluxe (1.5 mpbs down/1.0 mbps up) for $28/month + $6.99/month for Qwest.net ISP. Real speeds come in at 1.3 mbps down & 880 kbps up. Anyway, I've heard that a lot of the DSL outfits around the country are upping their speeds without cost to compete with cable specs...probably one of the reasons why Comcast upgraded.

Once Comcast switched to 3.0 mpbs down, which consistently measures at or above rating, I'm confused what to do. Side by side, downloads speeds favor Comcast, but I'm not sure if a couple of blinks of the eye less are worth the $11/month premium they charge for cable.

Plus, I've noticed my uploads with Comcast, which regularly clocked in at ~240-250 kbps prior to the upgrade, have dropped to around 160 kbps.

Comcast used to have 2 tiers of
broadband service as far as download
speed, with top speeds for business users
priced around $99 per month.

Suddenly, in an effort to compete with
DSL, Comcast got rid of the higher tier
plan and doubled everyone's speed.

I saw my speed dramatically increase.

Cox cable in northern va has doubled everyone's speed to 3Mbits per sec now.
They also have a newer plan that gives 4Mbit with 384k upload but it is too expensive for me ($79.00 a month).

Comcast increased the download cap from 1800 to 3300 on the standard silver package. The Pro service that was 3500/384 was moved to the business side and the new speeds for it are now 4300/384. If you want those speeds though it would be cheaper to upgrade to the home networking package. You have to use thier Linksys modem/router combo and have to pay $100 for the install but you'll get the same 4300/384 speeds as Pro.

Comcast Home Networking

DSL providers have countered with 3mbps upgrades and offerings of their own. Now rumors are starting again with Cable Co's looking to increase speeds. Comcast is apparently looking at bumping everyone to 5-6mbps down and 384-512kbps up. Nothing more then speculation and unofficial chatter from anonymous sources but time will tell.

Yeah, I've heard about Comcast looking to bump up to 6mbps download.....while I would be fine with the 384kbps upload...it would really kick ass for them to bump it to 512.

Comcast has been so vague about the invisible caps from the get go that it's hard to say. The complaints about receiving excessive bandwidth letters seems to have gone down in recent months so perhaps they caught enough heat from customers and the press to stop sending them out.
