Computer hooked upto reciever

I bought a headphone splitter and something that plugs into the splitter and then has 2 RCA jacks on it. I then connected a 20ft audio cable to that and plugged it into my home theater reciever so I can listen to music from the computer on the home theater. I have the computer speakers also plugged into the splitter. The problem is, when I have the cable from the reciever plugged into the computer, it distorts the sound coming through the computer speakers and make it a weaker sound. As soon as I unplug one of the cables, it sounds fine. I havn't noticed a problem with the sound on the home theater when the computer speakers are plugged in. Any suggestions?

I was playing around with things, and when the home theater reciever is turned on, I don't have the problem with the computer speakers, only when the reciever is turned off.
