Recordable DVD media question

Just bought a dvd burner (8X NEC +_ burner) and I'm looking for the best media to use with this drive. Along with dvdr discs I need some dvdrw as well. Is there any difference in +/- media besides compatability issues. Anyone know where I can found out what would be the best type of media I should use with this drive that would also give me playing compatability with the most dvd players?

www.dvdrhelp.com is probably your best bet, but be prepared to do some research at that site, and some cross-referencing to come up with what brand media you should use.

Over here most of the blank disc suppliers sell 'trial packs' - 10 different DVD-R or DVD+R brands - for exactly this kind of uncertainty.
