FREE alternative to Photoshop?

I need a free program I can download that I can use to edit (resize) some photographs. Right now, I only have MS Paint, but it causes diagonal lines to become jagged. I'd love Photoshop, but I'm too cheap

thanks
Jim

There is a program called The Gimp. It's not quite as good as Photoshop, but it should be good enough for what you are doing.

The website is www.gimp.org. The program was originally for Linux, but there is a Windows version, too.

Go to adobe and load the latest version of the Adobe Reader 6, it will also let you load a VERY limited Adobe Photoshop Album 2.0. Free, even !

When I bought my scanner, it came with a copy of Arcsoft's PhotoStudio 2000, an Adobe PhotoShop clone. It may not have all the features of PhotoShop, but it does have all I need to do basic and intermediate photo manipulations.

If you're planning to purchase a scanner or a Webcam, check out the bundled software. PhotoStudio or another Photoshop clone may already be included.

That's not exactly free unless you're doing something illegal.

Another vote for IrfanView. For basic stuff like resizing it's a great choice; I use it for that all the time.

For simple resizing, the easiest to use is a program that is free. It is "picturetray" available at picturetray.com. It is a very small program (300K) that installs in its own folder and installs no DLL's and makes no changes to your registry. Download it, unzip it in its own folder, and run it. If you don't like it, delete the folder and it's gone. (If only Microsoft's programs were so user friendly)

It will allow you to resize, rotate, compress, and save in a variety of formats. It has two panels, you drag the images to be resized to the left panel and then drag them off of the panel on the right. (or copy them from the temp directory it uses) It has its own viewer (double-click on an image in one of its windows) and shows statistics when you hover your mouse cursor over an image.

I use it all the time when posting images to the web or e-mailing them to others and it really helps. Did I mention it is free.
