winme user names/login

I recently inherited a pIII pc running windows me.

My problem is that I need to sign in as a guest and consequently am not allowed to make any signifiacant changes to the system, or even uninstall older programs.
Is there any universal sign-in that will allow me access to uninstall etc?

Thanks

Why do you need to sign in as a guest? I would assume it's because you don't have the password for a user with admin rights?

If that's the case, then I recommend backing up important data and just do a wipe and install (it's the most reliable uninstall of all. I'd also recommend using a version of Windows other than WinMe.

I always thought that ME (like Windows 98 and 95 before it) did not have real user security. I thought the user login was simply to allow different preferences for different users (desktop layout, screen savers, etc.).

Thanks for the responses.

I do need to sign in as a guest, due to the fact that the password and sign-in for the original master user-name was lost.

Can you please tell me more about the wipe & install. I am not familiar. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I agree that ME stinks, but it is going to have to do for a few months...

Thanks again.

Rob,

hit ESC when presented with a login prompt and go about your business as normal - you will have full "admin" rights as this point. search for all files ending in .PWL (password lists) and delete them. reboot, and when you start up you will be presented with a dialog asking you to set a user name and password. leave the password blank if you don't want it to bother you again

I'm pretty sure you can even click the X close window box on the password dialog. That way you won't even have to reach down to the keyboard.
