Red Hat Linux 9.0

Hi,

Does anyone have much experience with Red Hat Linux? I'm looking for some easy to use info on using Linux as a web server and audio server. Any online or offline places for general info would be appreciated. A step by step guide for setting up a web server would be GREAT. Anything out there?

You can set red hat to install apache. I would recommend getting a book on apache if you're serious about using the computer as a web server. Else you can use the readme to direct you to edit enough of the config files to get you going.

I'm running a web and email server on RedHat 9 (and another on RedHat 8). I've been very happy with it.

I second the notion to go to linuxnewbie, as they have lots of valuable information...I'm just in the midst of installing and running the old family box with apache/php/mysql so I don't have to keep testing on a remote webhost server...much faster to have the server upstairs.

Red Hat isn't necessarily the best server box either. There are cleaner, safer and more hardened linux distributions out there to do what you want to do.

Red Hat is great as a desktop, though. Very user friendly (for Linux).

As long as you only install what you need, it is pretty secure. If it's going to be exposed to the internet, you should of course run Bastille or something like that and either setup a good iptables firewall or have it running behind a well configured hardware firewall. You'll still be vulnerable just because you're running apache, but it's the best you can do and still be exposed to the internet.
