Cable Modem Packet Loss

I've recently started having problems with my cable modem service. The LEDs on the modem seem ok but when I attempt to ping a host (like yahoo), I have something like 50-75% packet loss. The 'specialist' on the other end of my phone callto the cable company told me that the problem was on my side since she could 'see' my modem and that they were sending it data. I haven't changed anything related to the cable line lately. Anyone with any ideas? Oh yeah, this happens intermittently, most times everything is just ducky, sometimes broke.

If you're getting packet loss it could be quite a few different things, it could be that your local cable company is having signal issues on the line do to many different things (i.e. if they're working on lines in the area, etc.) Could also be a problem with the cabling of the modem itself, try swapping the coax between the modem and the wall with another piece of high quality shielded coax and see if it still happens. could also be that your cable company is running a shitty router or is having too many people trying to access the router at the headend than its capable of. Could be there fiber link to the net being too congested the list goes on and on.

Jeremy:
Thanks, that's what I kind of figured. Just as a shot in the dark, I replaced a long run of cable that takes signal from where the cable comes into the house up to the 2nd floor. It was made up of 2 coax cables that were joined together, both were RG-59. I changed to 1 continuous run of RG-6. We'll see what happens. The cable co. always gives me (&*% when I call because I have 2 splitters before the modem. Both are 1Gig models and I'm using the -3.5db output on both.
I'm curious as to where the modem signal rides on the cable line (freq). My cable reception on my TV's upstairs is OK in the channel 2-13 range and gets progressively worse as you go up in the channels, that leg is behind 2 -7db splits. I don't have this problem downstairs where my TV is behind 1 less split of -7db.
