Is wood really necessary?

Hello everyone, first time here. I am trying to set up my first HT. From my limited research I believe I arrived at a decent entry level system with Polk audio stereos (fronts = RTi A1/A3). But I have limited depth to install the Front stereos so I am considering two alternatives:
1) Plastic stereos, like B&W VM1 or Bose
2) In wall or in ceiling fronts with a regular center, all Polk

I would like not to lose much sound quality, and I would like it to sound good with music and movies.

- Do you think the options above are noticiably inferior to the Polk stereos?
- Can anyone suggest smaller bookshlef speakers (less depth) with similar quality?

Thank you ,
Pexx

You're going backwards! . You started with the best of your options. Real speakers (Polk A3/A6). Then smaller plastic cube type (some are O.K. Bose is over-priced and has sonic issues-do a forum search), then in-walls which can sound decent but limit placement options among other things, then went to in-ceiling which is a real bad idea, especially for fronts. Try and go with the Polk's. If smaller is the only option then also consider Def Tech and Paradigm. But you can do better than Bose.

You want a tone-matched set of speakers all around to help create the 'surround' illusion.

While in-walls are sexy - I'd recommend getting a professional in to install them properly.

External speakers have a lot more flexibility.

B&W is a well-respected speaker line. Check out Anthony Gallo speakers (Home Theater Speakers | Gallo Stereo Speakers) These speakers have won praise from magazines and are on some recommended lists (unlike Bose).

With small speakers - you need a subwoofer because small speakers or in-walls dont do bass real well. Dont let this put you off.
