New to Home theater

Hello all!

I'm new to home theater. Currently buying a house and and the living room is 13x15 with vaulted ceilings. The room is shaped oddly so I will Have to hang my Samsung 42 inch Plasma on the fireplace. Due to that and the fact the wife will not let me have floorstanding speakers, I am forced to go inwall and/or inceiling speakers. I plan to use either a HSU or SVS subwoofer. my question is who makes good inwall/inceiling speakers. My budget is around $1500.

Don't use in-ceiling speakers. Just take that idea out of the equation right now.

Trust me and do yourself a favor. Forget about in-ceiling speakers. If you have no choice you can use them for surrounds, if you have no choice, but never in the front.

I'd say find some speakers that the wife can live with....there are many that are quite attractive. Speakers, I mean, not wives; though some of them are nice too.

Would you be allowed to use on-wall speakers? The new Paradigm Studio Esprits look quite nice (I haven't heard them yet, but I love the Studio monitors). A lot of other companies have started making on-wall speakers to address your exact situation. That might be a way of keeping the wife happy and having a nice clean look, while not having to sacrifice sound quality too much.

I disagree, you can have excellent results in a shared space with all in ceiling speakers. There are several very solid in ceiling speakers and many can be aimed are designed to fire at the listening area. Is it best case scenario, no, but if you want best case scenario build a dedicated room...

Klipsch, TruAudio, Polk, Preference, Sonance, HiFi Works, all make great speakers and have comprehensive lines from simple to THX and reference speakers.

First of all, Welcome to the forum Desmond. You will love the time you spend here. Secondly, John's great advice deserves repeating. No in-wall speakers. If in-wall is your only choice, then don't do surround sound at all my friend. Just use the tv speakers. I know this may seem harsh, but, it's true.

Sorry, I've got to concur with John. No matter how well the speakers are "aimed", when ceiling mounted their origin is still too far away from the screen to expect any anchoring of dialog or realistic pans. There is a big difference between the "best case scenario" of a dedicated room and having the dialog and main sound coming at you from up on the ceiling. IMHO, purchasing ceiling speakers is like not not being able to get a "best case scenario" F350 Turbo Diesel pickup to tow your boat, so you buy a 2 door compact. There are better ways to compromise due to esthetics than putting all speakers in the ceiling.
