New Powered Sub to replace non-powered one

Can i get a powered sub and hook it up to the HTiB receiver (kind of a piece of crap but the rest of the system sounds great)? the receiver wouldn't have to power anything right? If i just took the same wire that is hooked up to the
non-powered sub and put it into a new powered sub..would it work just as if i had bought a new receiver and plugged in this new sub?

What is the wire? Is it an RCA (phono) type, or is it a speaker wire? Is there one or two of them? Do wires then go from the sub to the satellite speakers? There is no way to give an accurate answer without more info.

sorry i'm a newbie as you can tell. well the wires are speaker wire, and there are two separate wires in each "wire" that runs to the speakers. they all come from the receiver so only one goes to the subwoofer.

Then you need a sub which can accept a "Speaker Level" input, which many have. Unfortunately, this is not nearly as good as a receiver has a line level sub output. Fortunately, many subs have both types of input, so when you upgrade the other parts of the system, the sub can come along. You just need to be certain you get a sub which can accept both speaker level and line level outputs.

so this brings me to my next question...if i were to buy a new receiver (onkyo 605?) would it be a simple process to plug existing speaker wires into the receiver even though the speakers that i have now were part of a HTiB?

It could be but most stand alone receiver have much more power than a HTiB. You will have to watch your volume as well as your crossover point with the sub.

As Robert said, it should be no problem. You CAN'T use your current sub, since real HT receivers don't have passive sub outputs. You have to get a powered sub. Plus, you most likely have to set the sub crossover (on thhe receiver) very high, since HTiB speakers typically have no low end at all.

In the end, you'll want to replace the speakers, which is the downside of HTiBs.

okay yeah i was eventually planning on replacing the receiver and all the speakers....just wanted to make sure i could at some point. thanks everyone!
