Help matching Receiver to HDTV !?

Our new HDTV has the following connections..

Cable/Antenna Inputs, Number: 1
Component Input Sets, Total Number: 2
Composite Video Inputs, Number: 2
S-Video Inputs, Number: 1
RGB 15 Pin Connector: Yes
Analog Audio Output: Yes
Analog Audio Output, Type: Fixed
Digital Audio Output: Yes
Digital Audio Output Type: Optical
HDMI Inputs, Number: 3

I want to buy a 5.1 theater system but I'm sort of mixed up on which connection type to look for, should I just worry about getting a receiver that has an HDMI output, or is one of the other connection types better?

In descending order of quality

1. HDMI (this has the advantage of having both audio and video in the same connection.
2. Component (for video, it is unlikely that you can see a difference between this and HDMI)
3. S-Video
4. Composite
5. Antenna

Re: Help matching Receiver to HDTV !?

If you get the right reciever, than the ONLY input you will need to use on your TV is HDMI. A lot of the newer recievers have HDMI inputs, and then one HDMI output that goes to the TV. So for example, in my system, I have a Blu Ray player, HD cable box and and HD DVD player...all connected to my reciever by HDMI. I then have ONE HDMI cable to the TV (the reciever easily does the switching). Makes for less trouble with connecting to the TV, and the reciever upscales all inputs (including standard DVD's).

My reciever (an Onkyo SR805) cost me $699. Speakers extra, of course.

It would also help to know what sources you're wanting to connect to the receiver, because that will dictate how many and what types of inputs you need on the receiver. And some receivers will convert non-HDMI video signals to HDMI to make connections to the TV easier. You'll also probably want a receiver that is capable of decoding the newest audio formats.

Re: Help matching Receiver to HDTV !?

At the moment the next piece of the system we are looking at is either a blu-ray player or an upconverting dvd player.
