16:9 vs. Just Scan on Samsung LCD

I know this is probably a dumb question, but can someone explain the difference between the 16:9 and Just Scan options on my Samsung 52" 1080p LCD?

Many Thanks !!

Re: 16:9 vs. Just Scan on Samsung LCD

It's not a dumb question, because I have "Just Scan" on my Samsung DLP, and I'm still not sure exactly what it does, even after repeated readings of the manual.

"Just Scan" directly maps the incoming image to the sets pixels, eliminating overscan and other possible processing. I'd definitely use it when watching HD discs, otherwise it's up to you based on what your source is.

Thanks for clarifying this for me ! One more question though, does it also make sense to use it when watching standard DVD's on my Blu-ray player? Even those that say "optimized for 16:9 TV's? Blu-ray player is connected to the TV via HDMI, by the way. Thanks for your kind help.

I'd use it if I were upscaling the DVD, and the Blu-ray player probably does. If you're not upscaling then it doesn't really matter which you use. If you use it for television you'll see extra information on the edges like closed caption data so I'd just leave it in 16x9 mode if I weren't watching a movie.

Another thing is to just try out the settings in all your formats like SD DVD, Hidef DVD, Standard televsion, etc. and see which one you like. I tend to overscan my RPTV when I watch most programming.
