Does Apple's recent announcement effect the future of how we watch movies??

With Apple's expected announcement of iTunes rentals coming today, will this have any real effect on how entertainment is delivered? Is HD-DVD v Blu-Ray a moot point? Will anyone shift their rental or purchase habits?

Apple - Apple TV

Although I'm a Mac-Geek for the past 20 years, I'm not really sure that Apple's online rental store is going to take off in the average consumer's homes. I know iTunes is the dominant form of online distribution of music but what is Apple really offering?

I can pay $250 for the privilege of renting(at regular video store prices) movies through the internet? I only have 24 hours to finish watching it? 480p max? The only way I would have been interested at all would have been if it had DVR or a Slingbox-type capability.

I already have online rentals available through my XBox and have only used it once. I also have a Blockbuster Online subscription and rent about 10-12 titles a month as it is. That comes down to about $1.15 a movie.

I think the future of distribution is through internet, but most likely on a subscription basis. If I purchase a movie, even for 5 Bucks (those bargain bins are great!) I usually will watch it more than once. Come to think of it, I wouldn't even mind having my entire purchased library online to recall whenever I wanted. I might pay for that...space is getting scarce!

The HD titles are 720p with DD5.1; the SD titles are 480p/stereo.
