Completely new to everything

Hello,

Well to start, I'm looking to create a sound system in my bedroom to blast my music. The music I listen to is mainly The Beatles (yes im a 16 year old who loves the beatles ). Anyways, I have researched google somewhat and have a general idea of what I need. Basically, I need a receiver (preferably with a phono input so i can listen to my beatles albums, but if not ill just buy a phono pre amp), and some speakers. My budget is about 3-400 dollars.

Any help is greaaaaaatly appreciated.

THANKS!

I'll let the others, that can answer this question better than me, answer this.
But I thought I'd let you know about Beatles Radio, if you don't know already.
You can listen to it here: Beatles Radio The Beatles Music www.beatlesradio.com
Enjoy!

Jeffrey: This may not be what you have in mind, but I recommend spending the majority of your available money on a pair of floorstanding front speakers. Sure...for 300 or 400 you can get an entry level Home Theater In A Box, but if you're serious about music, you won't keep it for long.

I'd research some of the better speakers: Paradigm, Definitive Technology, Mirage, B&W, etc. then find a used pair from someone here on the forum or from a reputable seller. Floorstanding speakers will include woofers, so you won't need a sub. Well built speakers will last you many years - then you can add a center & surrounds down the line. Or, if you want to purchase a matching set of fronts, center & surrounds, the speakers I mentioned will retain a lot of value as long as you take care of them.

You can pick up an inexpensive stereo receiver or used surround receiver for less than $100 to start...then upgrade when you're ready for a full home theater.

Re: Completely new to everything

So are those speakers considered bookshelf speakers? If so, hows this setup:

Receiver:
Onkyo TX-8222

Speakers:
Sub
PSW10

Bookshelf Speakers
RTi4

All are on crutchfield (sorry i cant post links until i have 10 posts)

I know its a little over 400 dollars, but would it be worth it? And btw I have some old JVC SK-S22 at home and they sound really good, so maybe i could possibly parralell (is that whats its called?) the bookshelf speakers with those or something :-)

Thanks again :-P

Re: Completely new to everything

If you're willing to spend @ $200 for a receiver...you might as well get a 5.1 receiver.

You can find the Onkyo you listed at accessories4less.com for $90.

If you like the Polk speakers, I'd drop the sub & spend $300 - $400 for a pair of Polk "floorstanding" speakers. You can add a sub later on when you are ready for a 5.1 setup.

If you go the "bookshelf" + sub route, you'll need to manage the crossover frequency...in other words, at what frequency will the sub take over for the bookshelf speakers or at what frequency will they both work together?

Others may disagree, but if I were in your shoes, I'd spend $90 for the reciever and as much as I could afford for a really nice pair of floorstanding speakers.

I agree with the other posters, get the best speakers you can afford now. Receiver technology will be constantly evolving, but good speakers will last you many years.

I personally like the Polk's on your list, having just purchased the RTi 8's. Keep in mind that through Crutchfield, the PSW10 is free with a qualifying polk purchase. Not a bad deal.

Re: Completely new to everything

ok so im looking at the polk rti8's, and they have some good reviews, but they are pretty pricey at 275 each. However I'll trust you guys that they are really good. But, do you guys know of a place that has discount speakers or anything along those lines? :-P. And whats a good, powerful surround reciever that sounds good with music, and wont put a larger hole in my wallet :-).

Thanks alot for you help!
