Need Remote Advice

Just purchased a Sony STR-DA7ES only to find the RM-TP1 remote dead on arrival. To replace this unit is much too expensive. ($400-$500) I have been considering a new Sony RM-AX4000A or Logitech Harmony 880. However, I have no knowledge of what works with what. Any advice or suggestions.

My equipment = Hughes TiVo - Sony RDR-VX530, DVD recorder - Sony DVP-NC85H, CD/DVD Player - Sylvania KVS699K VCR - Sears 26" Console TV.

Do not laugh at my TV. After 20 years it still as sharp as the day we bought it. The case it is in is a beautiful peace of furniture that looks good in my living room. However, I will be replacing it sometime this year with a Sony Bravia KDL-40V3000 40". (AFTER my wife gets her new kitchen)

Thank you for your time and advice.

Re: Need Remote Advice

Bob-
As long as your gear is all IR controlled (not sure about the sat receiver), any good quality universal remote should do the trick. It's going to come down to price, features and ergonimics. The Sony isn't as flexible as the Harmony and looks like it would be awkward to hold and use with one hand. On the other hand, some of the Harmony's buttons are too small for my big thumb. So it really comes down to which one works best for you.

No Signature...How boring is that!

Re: Need Remote Advice

I can guarantee the Harmony will work with 99% of the TV's out there. But you can check for your set by going to www.harmonyremote.com and downloading the software for a test drive. But even if you do not find your set on the list, all Harmony's are learning remotes so you can learn the buttons from your old remote. Harmony remotes come highly recommended for their ease of use and programming.

Re: Need Remote Advice

Adam & Jeff,

Thank you for your input. Yes my clumsy fingers have problems with all of the remotes I already own. I will check out the Harmony.

I would look into a URC MX-810. Programs similar to the harmony, but in my opinion easier to use.
