Subwoofer connections

I have an active subwoofer which I would like to connect to on old (Onkyo) Pro Logic receiver. Unfortunately, the receiver does not have a subwoofer out plug. I was told that I could connect the subwoofer's mono RCA plug to either the left or right front speaker. Is this possible?

Re: Subwoofer connections

That is not possible. If your sub has high level inputs, that's what you need to use. Years ago, I rigged a sub to my pro-logic receiver using the headphone output run through a car audio crossover that had line level inputs. It wasn't the best method but it worked for me.

Re: Subwoofer connections

You could also use the headphone out jack and an equalizer to limit the sound going to your sub amp. You don't want higher frequencies going to your sub so you need something to reduce them when you connect to a headphone jack (because the headphone jack is full range). Back before the days of sub out jacks that's how we pretty much had to do things. I built a sub that I set up that way. I also included a 100 hz choke to avoid getting any sounds above that level so I wouldn't have voices coming from my sub.

Getting an adapter to change from 1/4 inch out to RCA plugs is as easy as a trip to Radio Shack.

Your post reminded me why I built my sub the way I did. I've had it a very long time obviously. I've had it since before there were any sub outs on receivers if that tells you anything.

Re: Subwoofer connections

My living room stereo does not have a LFE out. My sub however has connections for speaker wires. I ran the L&R speaker wires to the subs inputs and then from the subs outputs to the speakers. I use the crossover settings on the sub. Does your sub have these connections?

Hey, No wonder the water don't work! This pipe is full of wires!!

Re: Subwoofer connections

I don't know who you are addressing with that question but the sub I built doesn't have that feature. I do have a sub that does though.
