Yes many people use PCs as HT sources, often called HTPCs. Theatertek is a great DVD playback program to use, great with remotes and such, and very high quality. Get a good video card for quality scaling, which is cheap now. I run my theater off a PC, but not to computer speakers, it's a fully functioned theater, but it's just a PC and networked server type system that feeds all the content for the theater. You can get as fancy as you want, PCs are fairly flexible, but take a lot of effort.
