Speaker Advice

I am building a house and have created a media room. Basically, I've been sworn away for the HTIB setups because of shortcomings with the speakers. So here is my question: Since I know nothing about the reputable speaker companies, can you guys direct me towards some of the better quality mix-n-match configurations? I will most likely be using an Onkyo 7.1 receiver and would like to keep the budget around $1000. I really like Klipsch and Infinity.

Here is what I know:
  • Avoid Bose
  • Pay close attention to the center channel
  • Get a good sub

Other than that, I need some good direction. Thanks in advance.

Re: Speaker Advice

Hello Jason,

SVS is a great company and their speakers sound really good to my ears. I believe their specialty is their subs, which rock by the way. They currently have a 5.1 set up for $999, their 7.1 is $1,175. This is a great system and you should look into it.

BTW, I don't work for SVS and haven't heard of them before I bought mine, but my wife and I love the sound. Their customer service is outstanding. And I think they have a great product.

Good luck and let me know what you end up with!

Don

I would have to say that $1000 would really be stretching the possibilities of a good system unless it is a small room. A good subwoofer will set you back around $500 minimum and that does not leave a lot for the rest of the speakers in the system.

Components come and go but quality speakers are a great investment, make the biggest difference in audio performance, and quality speakers can last for generations. Maybe piecing a system together over time might be a better solution, starting with a sub and\or a center channel and go from there.

just so i understand, you are saying $1000 won't be a "good" system or a "top-of-the-line" system? i would say a grand is a great start to a really good system with a few limitations, but i want to make sure i understand you completely first.

my room is 12' x 15' so that may help.

I consider 12' x 15' a smaller room and you should be able to fill the room with a $1000 system. There are some really good deals out there on discontinued models. If you do some serious shopping, you should be able to find a good system that fits your budget. I'm thinking (4) RB10's, (1) RC10, and a HSU VTF-2 MK 3 would do very nicely in your room. Might go over budget with stands for ear level setup but if you can build your own, could work out without too much added expense.

Re: Speaker Advice

Does anyone have the BIC Accoustechs that could comment on this system? This system would fall into your budget and is a full 7.1 system. I have been looking at these speakers and trying to find a place to listen to them, but people that I have heard that have them seem to like them.

I am looking at speakers to and would be interested to hear the recommendations from this thread.

Thanks,
JJ
