High Pass, Low Pass...

I have posted this to Audioholics Forum also, but am re-posting here in need of a faster response. Can an one help me with these questions?

I set all my speakers to small and have determined just from reading here (starting point mind you) to set my crossover at 60hz, but what do I set the rest of the setting at?

1: Crossover ( I set it to 60hz i octave higher than my -3db lower limit on my mains (30hz))
2: High Pass ( I set it to the default 12.0 db THX)
3 Low pass (I set it to the default 24.0 db THX)

4: LFE Level (I set it to the default 0.0 db THX)

I am running a B&K Ref 50 with a Rotel 1095 amp.

All my speakers are polks...

Main Towers Rti12 Overall Freq= 18hz-27khz, -3db Limits= 30hz-26khz

Center one CSi5 Overall Freq= 45hz-27khz, -3db Limits= 55hz-26khz

Surrounds FXi5 Overall Freq= 45hz-27khz, -3db Limits= 55hz-26khz

Sub PSW505 Overall Freq= 23hz-160hz, -3db Limits= 28hz-125hz

Thanks
Duane

Re: Hi

First off, I would set the crossover higher. At least 80 Hz and probably 100-120. Even though the mains have a reported -3dB low of 30 Hz, the center is 55. Plus, the sub reports -3dB at 28 Hz, so with the crossover at 60, it is barely getting going once it starts to seriously fall off. I know you will probably not want to take the advice to raise the crossover freq, but you are shortchanging the entire system by having it so low.

Then, get a calibration disc such as Avia or Digital Video Essentials and a sound pressure meter (Radio Shack analog model) and calibrate all the speakers. Nobody can tell you what to set the LFE or other channels for. You have to determine that yourself with those items. Instructions are included on the disc on how to do it.

You also might try using a more descriptive title to your threads. Every single one could have the title "Hi".

Low Pass High Pass,,,

About the title, I missed it the first time and then went in and edit it seconds later. It notes this at the end of the thread but I am not sure why it did not correct it. It kind of bummed me too, because I was afraid no one would even read the thread with Hi in the title.

Anyhow, thank you for your response. I am setting the crossover back to 80hz and will re-set the levels using my meter (radio shack). I just bought a Avia set up disk but have yet to use it. I am glad to hear the instructions are with it.

So then my answer for Low pass, high pass and LFE are derived from conclusions made from using the Avia disk + meter and calibrating my speakers?!!?

Again thanks for the help. I find this part difficult because I have no reference for what the system should sound like. It is so much better than anything I have heard in such a long time, but I know odds are that it is far from optimum.

Thanks again,
Duane
