need advice on ht system
I am starting from scratch. I have about $1000 to work with but i can stretch that a bit if it will be that much better. I dont have anything not even a reciever. What do you recommend? Its more for movies than music. Thanks for your help. This forum is great!

Re: need advise on surround sound
Okay how does the svs sbs-01 system compare to the x series from av123? How does the overall sound compare and the bass? Also whats the difference in the 3 x series setups and the sbs and scs setups? Thanks.

Re: need advise on surround sound
Is it just speakers you need or an AV receiver as well? 5.1 or 7.1? How big a room?

Re: need advise on surround sound
I need everything. A reciever and the speakers. I want to spend around 1000 and maybe stretch that some if it will get me that much more of a better setup. The room is about 12' x 14' with i believe 9' ceilings.

Re: need advise on ht system
Vinny,
Welcome to the forum!
You may notice that I changed the title of your thread, to distinguish it from the one you posted in "Speakers and Subwoofers". Even if you would decide to buy some speakers first, you also need to start thinking about your whole system.
Hence this title.
(In general it's not very productive to ask exactly the same question at two different places in this forum, because people wouldn't take other responses into account when replying. Also, some feel confused if they encounter the same question somewhere else. )
Good luck with building your first system!

Re: need advise on ht system
I see two options for you.
1. Buy matching front speakers and a receiver for $1000 now. Save up money, and later on add a sub, center channel and rear speakers. Building a HT system this way, you'll be able to buy better equipment, which will give you better sound. When you set a price, and try to buy everything at once, you will surely buy inferior quality components. Unless your budget is way higher then 1K.
2. Buy HT in a box. You won't be buying quality, but you can have everything you need for HT in one shot.
Most of us in this forum will recommend option 1, but you will have to make the final decision.
Good Luck...

With a $1000 budget, I'd suggest you give serious consideration of bassman99floyd's Option 1. With some judicious shopping, you might even get a very nice 3.1 set up.

Speaking as someone who just bought an HTiB, I think option #2 would be hard to justify with a $1000 budget, even if you want everything at once. The subwoofer is the biggest issue; my experience has been that HTiB subs are not of great quality, and it's an expensive part to replace. As you start to get into budgets above $700 or $800, you can buy a decent receiver and still have enough left to buy 5 speakers and a subwoofer.
(Note 1: I haven't listened to the Onkyo 997, so I'm not sure how it performs compared to separates, and I don't know how much credence to give to its THX certification.)
(Note 2: I went the HTiB route because through a series of deals and luck, I was able to get an Onkyo 894 for $550. I'd have spent the bulk of that on a receiver if I got separates, and the speakers aren't great but they do the job.)
*drops 2 cents in the bucket*

Re: need advise on ht system
Thanks for fixing my thread. So say i did go with the piece it together route, what do you recommend. I would like good bass and clear sound obviously. Say i would spend $1500 would that get me a decent set with reciever? Thanks for the replies.
