lcd for divx

I'm planning to buy a lcd(preferably samsung) and mainly for watching divx movies, what size should i go for 26 or 32,cos when i checked the lcd in the store with digital sdtv i could clearly see artifacts and the picture was not impressive at all.
Rips I watch(>1.5 gb per movie)..
1.Wht distance should be maintained between tv and the couch..
2.Can the artifacts be minimized with calibrating the tv
3.Will playing the Divx in a hd dvd player show any improvement(Will the hd dvd player upscale the divx)

thx

Generally, I recommend a smaller screen for lower resolution formats. I use a 27" display for standard definition programming for the same reasons you mentioned (video artifacts like macroblocking).

The attached link is not a perfect document but should help with seating distance recommendations.

I doubt much can be improved on the DivX format using an HD video player. You can only do so much with the limited resolution. Some artifacts can be minimized through calibration but it really depends on the display and the player combination.

That said, Divx is low resolution, even lower than SP, with the expected loss of image quality when viewed at HD distances. I don't know of any upscaling players that will upscale Divx, although that doesn't mean there aren't any. But even if there are, I would assume the upscale algorithm is not optimized for an obscure codec like Divx, so I personally doubt it will help.

You are going to have to live with the limited resolution that the files provide. You may find a program to augment the DivX format and it will probably be a PC based solution so I guess yes is the answer to your first question.

DivX never really made it here in the states but it still has a foothold in the EU.

That is the danger of adopting a format that does not survive, or at least, flourish to provide future support.

I would suggest posting your questions at the Tom's Hardware website forum. Some really geeky folks over there that might be able to help you.

I am not up to speed on lcd technology. I am a plasma fan.
From what little I have read, I give Samsung the nod between the two but I am sure others more LCD knowldedgable will chime in.
