Power spike problem.

Hello All,

I have lurked here for a while now and learnt alot.

I have a question about the power supply for my home theatre system.

I have a 32 lcd hd tv (muted) with a Pioneer VSX 916 av amplifier running my sound system and is all connected via a 6 way power extension directly into a wall socket (not an over expensive item).

When I am watching the TV with the sound at any level, my freezer causes my sound to flicker very quickly off and then back on.

This is when the compressor on the freezer cuts in or out. It does not affect the picture, purely the sound.

My questions is would running a surge protector on either the freezer or the home theatre system suppress this "spike". I am worried that this continued problem is going to damage something. Either that or i am going to set fire to my freezer!!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

Twere me, I'd have a separate circuit run....for one or the other. Sounds like you're pulling too much juice sometimes.

I don't think a surge surpresser will help; you're getting a drain, not a surge. I'd try a UPS. Just make sure it's rated correctly for all the items you're plugging in.

Uninterrupted Power Source = UPS

Mainly used for computers, it will provide power in the event of a power outage, and give you ample time to save your files, so you can power down safely.

I was getting noise from my system at one point. A very cheap fix, is to get one of those 3 prong to 2 prong converter. The thing you would use if you had a 3 prong plug, and need to plug it into a 2 power outlet. For about a buck, it cured my foreign noises.

I think Mort is on the right track. It sounds like the freezer and the HT are on the same circuit. If your house is wired properly, they don't have to be near each other to be on the same circuit. You can test turning of each circuit to see if the freezer and HT both go off with the same switch. Then, try to find an accessible outlet in the HT room which is on a different circuit. Then run a heavy 12GA 3 conductor extension cord to the HT. I actually did this as well because my system pulls so much power, I wanted to split it ofer 2 circuits. Just make sure it is a 12Ga cord. They are kind of expensive.

A large enough UPS should also cure the problem, but will cost a few hundred $$. You'll need a very powerful one. I would find a solution to this. From what you are saying, it could be severely shortening the life of your receiver, powered sub (if you have one) and probably other components. You might also have the freezer checked. It may be dying.

NOT a good idea to unground your equipment. It is better to solve your ground problem or use an isolation tranformer. Not to mention your insurance company would probably refuse to pay for damages should a fire occur.

A separate circuit would be the best answer and a quality surge supressor like a Tripp Lite would be suggested. A UPS would also work but usually cost more money for one with adequate power to run you AV equipment.
