Front Projection in an RV

Most posts deal with how large a picture can be made. My question deals with locating the projector 14 feet back from the screen area about 2 feet above the center of the screen. In an RV.

I only have room for a 37 inch wide screen. What type of projector would be best in this application with Directv and DVD's as inputs?

Perhaps you can give me guidelines relative to picture clarity and brightness compared to my 24 ich flat CRT TV.

Thanks for getting me started.

Are you sold on projection? I would think a Plasma or LCD flat screen would be a better choice...brighter, more contrast, and you won't have your own shadow on the screen!

I agree with Chuck. The benefit of front projection is the larger screen area for a reasonable price. If you can only fit a 37" diagonal screen, there is no sense getting a front projector when any of a dozen LCD flatscreens will work just fine and be priced about the same.

Re: Front Projection in an RV

Jeff,

Thanks for the response. The max screen width is 37 inches equalling about 44 inch diagonal depending on the 4:3,16:9 format. This an initial exposure to Front Projection. The normal viewing position (seating) will keep us out of the picture.

Since the costs of a 37 inch diagonal LCD (37 inch Frame width) are close versus Front Projection I thought it might be a good trial.

It would also give me the flexibility to go to a larger screen at home, in the garage or outside. Perhaps to use as a Rear Projection to replace my 60 inch Magnavox Rear Projection if it fails beyond repair.

Is a Front Projection viable in a situation where sunlight will come in thru windows or is it only viable in a dark/dim room.

FP is only viable when you have ambient light control. If you have sunlight streeaming in, you will be disappointed in the picture. Some use FP in rooms without light control, but personally I wouldn't. Plus, you would have to get the brightest, highest contrast FP for those conditions and that means more $$.

Re: Front Projection in an RV

Jeff,

Thanks for the analysis. I will look into a 37 inch diagonal LCD. What would be the things I should look for or avoid? I don't need HD as my input in the RV is Standard Directv or DVD.

I have seen a Polaroid 37 inch at Walmart for about $900. Your advice is appreciated.

Thanks.
