colors are messed up using dvi to hdmi cable

First post here!
My problem is when playing dvd's the night time scenes (color black mainly) are all pixely and weird looking when using the hdmi cable. Problem goes away, and picture actually improves by using the junky composite cables that came with the dvd player! I believe i have everything set up correctly. Is something not compatible? Do i have a bad cable? Heres a run down of my set up
Mitsubishi WS-55315 (T.V)
Onkyo TX-SR604 (REC.)
Onkyo DV-CP704 (DVD)
Cables- A.R PRO II from dvd to reciever,
Monster ultra 800 hdmi >dvi from reciever to T.V

Any help out there would be greatly appreciated as this problem is very annoying!

Re: colors are messed up using dvi to hdmi cable

You have to recalibrate when switching to the HDMI cable, as well as change the settings most likely, for the output type - the output settings may be different for component vs HDMI. Does this player upconvert?

Re: colors are messed up using dvi to hdmi cable

By recalibrate I mean, colors will shift somewhat and settings like brightness, contrast and sharpness will all be affected. The settings that you use for component may not match the setting for HDMI and could cause the difference you are seeing. For me, the contrast and brightness were quite different. To calibrate, you need a setup disc like Avia or Digital Video Essentials which aren't cheap, or the other Ovation disc: Home Theater Tune Up which can be found for around $15

I can't say for sure that is what is going on, but it is worth a look and any of those discs are definitely worth owning

Re: colors are messed up using dvi to hdmi cable

I have a service tech coming out next week to clean the t.v. I will have him recalibrate it and maybe he can shed some more light on the situation.
