Out of Phase

I have a Yamaha v2400 receiver with an automatic setup feature. During this setup, it listed all of my 7 speakers as "REV" after an out of phase message - except the subwoofer. That was apparently OK. I assume this means all the other speakers were "reversed" and need to be switched? 4 of the speakers were professionally installed in the walls and I confirmed the + and - were properly hooked up. The remaining speakers I installed and also confirmed the + and - were correct. So, should I switch all of the speakers? How does the receiver determine this and what happens if I don't?

Thanks.

Re: Out of Phase

Hi Dave.

You dont really need to do anything. The fact that the setup software detected all of your speakers as being reversed says they are all wired consistantly. If it really bugs you, just flip the speaker wires at the back of the receiver and the setup software will be happy.

The problem is that sometimes 1 speaker is wired backwards and it is out-of-phase with the others. This means the other speakers are pushing out , but the odd speaker is pulling in with the same signal. Thats not great.

The setup software ... is picky. It fires a test tone and has detected your speaker drivers are pulling back when it assumes they should be pushing out. So it reports them all as "REV". As long as all the speakers are forward or "REV", you are fine.

Hope this helps.
