Re: what is the best mode on reciever to get best results

If you have a full THX setup, that is, THX certified receiver and speakers, it's supposed to be best to listen in one of the THX modes. In my case, I have a THX certified receiver, but my speakers are not, so I just listen in "Standard" DD or DTS mode, with PLIIx on for full 7.1 surround. If the DVD I'm watching is encoded in DD-EX or DTS-ES, I'll go ahead and listen in that mode, which the receiver will usually automatically detect. I actually haven't really tested any of those "Adventure" modes, "Ehanced" modes, "70mm" modes, etc. on my receiver. I'm just not too big on DSP modes. Especially for music, to which I'll usually listen in straight stereo or 7-channel stereo, if I happend to be up and around.

"BE the miracle!"

Re: what is the best mode on reciever to get best results

Hi Tony.

Most audiophiles prefer to turn off all the DSP modes for music. Accuracy is the goal.

But movie soundtracks .. are largely artificial. You can leave the DSP modes off, or pick the ones that sound best to you.

For example, I sometimes use the "Stadium" mode when watching sports, and I tend to like the "70 mm" mode for SciFi/action movies, but not for drama/comedy movies.

So it's personal choice.

I do have 1 story about DSP modes if it might help.

Years ago I had a co-worker who was 'into' music. He put himself through college playing in bands or setting up studios/events for others. He had around 5 receivers and speakers in every room and on his back patio. I asked him what he thought about DSP modes as I was wondering if a receiver with these was better than one without. He basically said he thought they were a gimmick and that they were un-important.

The next Monday after this conversation, he came by to tell me he had changed his opinion. Over the weekend he had looked at his newest receiver and noticed that it was set to "Jazz2". He turned it off. The next day he fired up the system while puttering around the house. After a while he noticed the music sounded bad. Real bad. He went so far as to haul his speakers into the garage to test them because he was sure he had blown a driver. Then he rememberd the DSP setting. He hooked everything back up, put the mode back to "Jazz2" and suddenly the music sounded wonderful again.

He thought about it and rememberd that when he first got the new receiver he had played with the DSP settings and just left it on the setting that sounded best. A year later - he was shocked at how not using the DSP mode make his music sound bad. His best guess is that the acoustics in his living room were poor and the DSP mode seemed to compensate.

Hope this helps.

I wouldn't even have any DSP mode on - I'm a purist when it comes to audio. I prefer to hear the actual original native source how it was intended to be heard.
