Small Bedroom setup?

First off, I know nothing about speakers/subs/receivers, but these choices were within by budget. My budget is $200 speakers only, or $300 speakers/subwoofer. My room is 10’ x 12’. I say it will be around 70% Movies/TV, 30% music. I will only be able to fit a 5.1 surround. My options are:

1. Polk Audio R15 (2 Pair) and POLK CSi25.
shipped $170 Frys.com
2. Polk Audio - RM6700 5 Piece Satellite Speaker System
shipped $246.44 OneCall.com

With 1 and 2, I’m leaning to the STF-1 subwoofer that I will be getting at a later date. I may be able to fit a 10 in sub, but I still don’t want to spend more than $300.

3. Infinity - TSS-450 Platinum
shipped $291.71 OneCall.com
4. JBL SCS200-5
shipped $249.88 electronics-expo.com

With all 4 choices, I will probably go with Yamaha- HTR-5930SL or Onkyo TX-SR304S both $199

My last choice would be the Onkyo HT-S790S $420

Right now, I’m leaning to the Polk R15/Csi25/STF-1 sub. Which choice would you go with? Also, if there are any better choices within my budget please post it for me.

Sorry I couldn't link the sites, up I don't have 10 post

Re: Small Bedroom setup?

I have the Polk RM6700s and an Onkyo SR-500. I recommend both very much. The room I'm using them in is 14x22, so you'll be fine in that regard. I'm using them almost exclusively for home theater (say 97%); although I do have the "b" channel routed out back for the porch.

While I love the Polks, when it comes to speakers you really have to listen to them yourself because preference is everything.

When it comes to the receiver, the Yamaha has the better name. And my quick search has it with the higher power at 110W vs 65W. But advertised wattage is very subjective. I don't think you'll need more than the Onkyo's 65. And comparing them side by side I like the Onkyo since it provides more switching options. BTW, if you go with the Yamaha, J&R has it for $160

Re: Small Bedroom setup?

I definitely would not say that Yamaha is the better name, both are pretty equivalent IMO, and at this price point, most of what you are going to find is pretty similar regardless of brand.

I have the R15s on loan from a friend at the moment and they are a tiny bit better than the speakers that come with the Onkyo package. IMO, they are good, not great. I'd personally stay away from the Tiny satellites.

If you are looking at the STF-1, I would seriously just consider the HSU VT-12 package with the STF-1 which would be $550 + shipping.

Alternative would be to go with the Polks R15s and CS and an alternative sub for a little less with about the same performance as the STF-1 would be the Onyx X-sub for $199 www.av123.com
