Have sony stereo with DTS/5.1/need help

Ok, im not real good with all this stuff but here's what I got. A sony stereo that has digital dts and 5.1 dolby but I cant get a good surround sound with it. Is it too old?
The other thing I need to know is with the 5.1 it has rca hook ups in the stereo but the speakers just have the normal 2 wire hook up so I dont have cables to plug into the 5.1. I connected a digital cable, is that better than the 5.1 or does it over ride it?
Let me know the best solution. The system is at least 10 years old so maybe I just need a new set up, not sure. If so What would you recommend for under 500 bucks?
Thanks
Mike

You should be fine with the digital connection, however you have to configure the DVD player to output the correct signal or you will not get "proper" surround, and that may be why you aren't pleased with the sound you are getting. In the DVD player setup menu (with no disc in the player), there will be a setting for digital audio; it should be set to Bitstream not PCM, and you will usually need to turn DTS on also. Try that and see how it sounds before looking to buy something new.
