Is something wrong?
Hello all,
First, I am very new to Home Theatre, in fact we just recently got our Harman/Kardon system in place (AVR 135). I have a center speaker, two front speakers, a subwoofer and 2 back speakers (surround?). However I can only hear sound from one of the back speakers, and none from the other at all. Is this a problem with the set up (I didn't do it, a guy came in) or what? This happens during some TV, and some DVD's I tried.
We rang the guy who set it up and he said it was the material we were listening to, just kind of wanting a second opinion though. Just seems wierd that sound comes clearly from one but not the other.
Also if someone has the AVR 135, how do I see the OSD thing, is this supposed to show on the TV or just on the front of the AVR.
Thanks
*EDIT* I should maybe put it more clearly- I'm yet to hear sound from the right back speaker

Re: Is something wrong?
Thanks for the reply Steve,
Just had a quick check and the only inputs showing are normal TV, AMPLIF and Input 4 which shows nothing (think its the antenna or something).
Anyway I'll have a better look later tonight, maybe the "guy" took it out though..
Thanks,
Ken

Re: Is something wrong?
Sounds like he renamed one of the TV inputs to "Amplif" That could be either a component (GREEN,RED,BLUE) wires, or a composite (yellow only) input. You'll have to look at the back of the TV to see what is hooked up.
Do you have a cable box or Satellite box? Just wondering why anything is hooked up to what you are calling "normal tv" Are you using Channel 3 or 4 for your tv viewing or do you have straight cable or antenna and using the TV for changing all channels.(2-100 or whatever it goes up to)

Re: Is something wrong?
By TV I mean normal TV, not cable TV or whatever.
I looked at the back of my TV, the only things connected are the antenna cord and into the Input 1 connections are what I assume is the amplifier wires. They are coloured White, Yellow and Red, the slots they are connected into has COMPONENT labelled above it, then Y (white), Pb (yellow) and Pr (red). The White, Yellow and Red connections are all in the same cord.
The TV/VIDEO button (on my TV remote) which allows me to change between normal TV and normal TV with HK sound brings up a little menu like this:
TV
INPUT 1 (Amplif)
INPUT 2 (empty)
INPUT 3 (empty)
INPUT 4 (seems to think its connected, but its really empty :|)
I thought there would be something else which I could select to view the OSD but... theres not.
I don't know if it makes a difference but I live in Australia, so we might use different colours...
Thanks again

Re: Is something wrong?
Well First of all he used and audio cord for component Video,,, WRONG,WRONG WRONG!!!!
You need to have a Component Video Cable Connected from the Receiver to the TV its Y(green) Pb(blue) and Pr(red). althought you will still get a picture using and audio cable you will have problems down the road..... It's the wrong cable.
If he charged you for a Component video cable you got ripped off.
If you unplug the Yellow that's connected on the back of your TV you should see a Green Plastic insert where he's got that yellow plugged in. That verifys that the entire system is connected with the wrong cables......
What you need to do is get a component video cable. It's made for Video, not the cord this "guy" used.
Connect the component Video cable from the componet video out on the back of the receiver to where he now has the yellow, red, white.
Green to Y, Blue to Pb, and Red to Pr.
Is the DVD Player also connected with a Yellow, red white in the Y,Pb,Pr to the HK??? if so that's wrong also!!!! Get another component Video cable and connect the DVD to the HK via Y,Pb,Pr using the correct cable.
Then reuse the cable this "guy" gave you.....
Then Many of the Yellow, red, white cables can be split apart. You don't need the red and white. If the cable isn't molded in a way that you can't just seperate the yellow wire from the red and white (just pull them apart) You'll end up with one yellow in one hand and the Red and white in the other hand.
Connect the Yellow only from the Yellow 'Monitor out" of the HK Amp to input 4 Yellow only on the TV. Just leave the red and white hanging there not connected to anything on either end.
If you can't seperate the yellow red white wire don't worry about it, just connect the yellow to monitor out and yellow at the other end to input 4 yellow.
If input 4 isn't a Yellow (composite video) use and input that has the Yellow input. Those inputs will also have the red and white associated with them on the back of the TV, BUT you Don't use them. We just need to get the Composite video (yellow only) from the HK to the TV.
Then when you set your TV to the Input that the Yellow only is connected the OSD will be working.
HOW ARE YOU LISTENING TO YOUR TV AUDIO????? JUST THROUGH THE TV SPEAKERS?
If that's the case... we'll continue on getting that working also. You should be able to get your TV audio through your HK also.
We will reuse the red and white cable that you seperated from the yellow in the last steps and connect those to the Audio OUT from the back of the TV to an unused audio in on the HK. Then you will at least have sound for regular tv throught your HK. If you have a VCR forget the above connection and continue to the next paragraph on connecting the antenna to the vcr and going the VCR route....
Do you have a VCR connected to this system?
If so... the VCR should have the antenna going to it first. Then another Yellow, red, white from the VCR Audio OUT&Video out to the VCR in on the HK. Then you can use the VCR as your tuner and have your TV sound throught the HK Via the VCR and you would be on the same input to watch tv as you connected the monitor out of the HK to the TV. ( This is only if you have a VCR).
PS.... Fire the "guy" who hooked this up. I hope you didn't pay for the install as it has been done shotty and wrong.
If this was a company that installed this.... call them and complain. Tell them that you would like someone that knows what they are doing to come and connect this like it's supposed to be!!!
Let me know your results.
I would love to know who the installer is if it is a Company... Let us know if you can.
If it's a friend.... don't go there....
If it's a comercial company I'd love to hear who's doing this type of totally inferrior work.

Re: Is something wrong?
I'm getting TV Audio through the HK Speakers, we don't have a VCR although we have a Set Top Box.
We are going to get him back in a few days and I'll probably show him this and ask a few questions about his dodgey job
All I want is to know that everything is working fine, and make sure the surround speakers are set up correctly.
I'll reply back with the results.
Also,
He doesn't work for a company, however the place we purchased the system from recommended him, so who knows... maybe he just didn't have any component cords left and thought we'd never know..

Re: Is something wrong?
Yeah and maybe he is the brother in law of the place you bought it from.
