1080i or 720p

This is my first post on this forum so I hope it's in the right place.

I'm looking into buying a rear projection TV and want to know which resolution is better, 1080i or 720p. I notice on LCD and DLP set that the highest resolution is 720p and on CRT sets it is 1080i. I've heard that right now only CRT and Plasma sets are capable of 1080i so does that mean it translates to a better picture.

Also, should I find out from my cable company which resolution they transmit their HD in? Do some transmit in 720p and some in 1080i and should I base what TV I buy based on that? Hope this makes sense to somebody. Thanks.

There are arguments on both sides. I don't think one is really any better than the other one. As far as I know, fixed picel displays can only do "p" by nature. So, 1080i will never happen, 1080p will be the next step in fixed pixel technologies.

Most cable companies transmit their HD signals in 1080i but if the native resolution of the HDTV you purchase is 720p, the TV will accept the 1080i signal and convert it to 720p. Both 720p and 1080i resolutions are considered to be HD. In any case I wouldn't worry about it; either way you will be seeing the HD in true HI-Def in 720p or 1080i, whichever resolution is "native" to the display you decide to purchase.
