Picture in Picture: still possible with VCR cable hook up?

I currently have my cable running through my VCR (so I can record) with component outs going to my Receiver, and then a monitor cable to my TV. The result is I can't use my Sony's various PIP functions, as it only recognizes the one image the monitor is sending it. I'm wondering if there is any way to be able to record cable shows and still be able to use picture in picture functions. Thanks for any expert advice!

You have to split the cable before the VCR and route the split cable to the coax in on the TV. The TV will then be able to tune the coax in for the PIP and the VCR can tune the cable in for the component.
