Should I go through the Receiver with Component Video?

should I use my Receiver as a hub for my video between my DVD player and RPTV? Also between my sat. box and TV? (no HD signals)

I remember reading somewhere that its always preferable to send video signals directly to my TV when possible. My new TV will have at least 2 inputs for component video, so should I use them directly and stick to the receiver for strictly sound inputs from those devices?

Preference. but in my experiences even with HD signals, if your AVR component video swtching is rated at 50mhz or greater, it really makes no difference, in most cases.

If 480p is the highest res your switching, you can go way down on that badwidth requirement.

Im sorry but Im not sure what any of that means. Im really new to all of this.

My receiver is a 3 year old Aiwa that cost about $300 new (I dont know what model it is)

My DVD player is a panasonic progressive scan DVR, my new tv is a 60" Sony GWIII

I will be hooking up an Xbox from time to time, will that one be better off going direct to the TV?

Does your Aiwa even offer video switching?
I don't think it does, but with out the model number, there is no way to really be able to tell.

But I digress:
Always try to use the best video and audio hookup available on your output device.

In Audio:
Optical and digital coax is best.
Analog is generally the only other type

In Video:
DVI / HDMI is digital and considered best
Next would probably be a connector that looks like a computer VGA connector.
next step down would be considered component video whcih is three individual connectors
next step down would be Svideo
the last bottom of the barrel with be Composite (one 2 conductor cable that carries the entire video sigal)


And many people feel, if at all possible you should connect only video to your display and only audio to the your Aiwa.

read the beginner's faq (link at top of forum) - there's some good info about this. (heck, i think i'm the one who wrote it...not sure now...)

my personal bottom line: try it both ways.

if you don't see a difference, go through the receiver as it invariably makes it easier to switch *both* your audio and video with one button.
