DVD/VCR Combo Unit & Onkyo Receiver (Coax digi out)

Hi all, I am back for some advice, again on connections.

I just hooked up a very budget system for some friends. They got and excellent deal on the Onkyo HTS-760 ($299, AND a $50 rebate. Wow!) They already own a very basic Zenith 32" TV and a Samsung(?) DVD/VCR Combo unit, and a standard Dishnetwork tuner.

I replaced the coax cables they were using with composite cables - Audio R/L and Video from the sattelite to the DVD/VCR input. On the back of the combo unit, there is Red/White/Yellow output that is for BOTH the VCR and the DVD player. There is also a section for DVD only, and it consists of component outputs for video, and a single Digital Coax Output for Audio. I installed the R/W/Y cables for the VCR, and for the video, and I installed the coax audio cable. The composite cables went to Video 1 on the back of the Receiver, and the digi coax went to the only input.

After some tinkering, I got the DVD player to work well. The sound is incredible for an out of the box system, even more so when you consider the price. However, there is a quirk. There is a button on the combo unit to switch from DVD to the VCR (and by extension, the Sattelite). This switches the video just fine, but it does not switch the audio. In fact, it plays both audio sources. As of now, they have to press the Digital Audio Input source button on the Onkyo to switch to Optical, thereby leaving only one audio source.

Based on my crude description, can you determine a better set-up, something easier to switch from DVD to TV? I was not expecting both audio sources to appear - is there a setting I can change to remedy this? Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
