New Home Theater Owner Needs Help!!!

Just received the Panasonic SC-HT700 home theater system as a gift. I also have a Dishnetwork satellite system. OK here is the problem...My t.v.,4 years old, only has a coaxial cable setup, which my satellite receiver is currently hooked to. How do I incorporate all three. My system was sent to me with a S-Cable....I think I know the answer to my question. I need to buy a new t.v. Please ....someone give me some advice!!!!

Welcome Sam. And congratulations on your present.

Your satellite receiver should have an audio output (probably it will be (two) R/L RCA outputs, in addition to the coax you are using. Get a pair of RCA interconnects and run the R/L audio outputs to the R/L audio inputs of your HT system (I actually don’t know this system, but I’m sure that it will have one).

This will allow you to use your HT audio for TV telecasts. This takes care of the audio.

For the video you will need an S-Video to Coax RF modulator package. This will cost maybe $40 and most will also handle a composite (RCA) out as well as an S-video out. With a package like this you can also run the DVD audio into the TV (it will be mono, not stereo).

I won’t vouch for the picture quality, but it will work.

Or you can save the $40 and apply it to a new TV.

Thanks so much for the help. You have confirmed what I thought needed to be done. Also, I am going to buy a new television. My wife and I deserve it! But anyway, can the satellite video be routed through the DVD using the "video" on the RCA interconnect? It seems I could run the DVD and video portion of the satellite into the television independently. The DVD-to-t.v. using the S-cable and the satellite picture-to-t.v. using the "yellow" video connect. Am I grasping this concept or way off in left field?

You will need a switch box that allows multiple coax inputs and a single output. Run both the satellite coax and the coax from the RF modulator (and from the DVD player) to the switch box. The output of the switch box to the TV.

But if you are buying a new TV, just make sure that you get one that has enough inputs to handle a feed from your satellite receiver and your DVD player. Plus a couple of more, as you never know what you might want to add.
