General Mills DVDs have started to appear...

After hearing sightings of these for the past 2 weeks I finally found them in an Albertson's store. Several different General Mills cereals have the DVDs on the front of the box, with the disc visible so you can see which one you're getting. There is a total of 4: Jackie Chan Adventures (animated I guess), Bear in the Big Blue House, and the movies Buddy and Muppets Take Manhattan.
Now for the bad news: I've heard both movies are ONLY pan-and-scan, so I didn't get those. They are already available pretty cheap with both widescreen and pan and scan versions (no cereal included.) Checking these discs they actually have the playing surface stamped on both sides with one partially covered by the label- look at the numbers stamped on the disc itself.

Asked at my usual grocery store this morning and the manager said that to get this promotion, huge quantities had to be ordered, so they wouldn't be getting any. I'm thinking Wal-Mart's looking good for these.

Today's newspapers also have an ad for them with a coupon for $1.00 off 2 boxes.

Wal-Mart, here I come...

My local Stop & Shop had them in/on Honey Nut Chex today. It looked like they had all 4 DVDs but only in this variety of cereal. They were on the large boxes , priced at $4.99.

Bear in the Big Blue House is 4 x 3 and had heavy promotions in the beginning of the disc. You can fast forward throught them at least. PQ was good as for sound the kids watched it upstairs. I tried to watch Buddy with the little one but the PQ was horrible and the story seemed lame even for children(mine lost interest very quickly into the movie). The bottom line is "what's for free is for me" addage goes. You get waht you pay for, the cereal was at least worth it!!!

I got Jackie Chan Adventures and Muppets Take Manhatten today, in Lucky Charms and Honey Nut Cherrios. Got them at Vons (Safeway) in Burbank, 2 boxes for $5.00.

Muppets Take Manhattan is...well, full frame, and not a great transfer, but I've seen worse. Tons of promos on that one for Jim Henson videos that you have to skip past a la Disney.

Jackie Chan looks LOVELY, at least on my 27". Sharp, grain-free, with bright color and great contrast. This HAS to have been shot digitally -- there is simply no grain at all, even when I zoom the picture in 3 times. Good DD 2.0 stereo sound, too. I was surprised at the amount of bass on the soundtrack. Not huge, but more than I expected.

There's a WB commercial for the show, and a "Bear in the Big Blue House" DVD-ROM game to play.

Jackie Chan Adventures contains two episodes: The premiere episode, The Dark Hand, and episode #6, Shell Game. I had thought this show was unavailable elsewhere on DVD, but both episodes are part of Columbia TriStar DVD sets.

Still, these cereal premiums are likely to become collector's items in the years to come. Check out what cereal prizes from a decade or more ago are going for on E-Bay -- sometimes over $100. At $2.50 per box at Safeway/Vons, you might want to stock one or two away unopened for a few years...
