Big e-Sata sittin - Uhg!

OK, so I read a ton of stuff on connecting eSata hard drives to cableboxes and ended up buying a 1 Tera drive for my DVR ($220 USD).

The cable box unit is a Scientific Atlanta HD8300 with a sata connection in the back.

I read the HD8300 directions on adding an external HD carefully and plunged it right in - the HD drive light is on - so power is getting to the drive.

So when I connect the unit to the Sata drive on the box, I get a message on the TV asking me if I want to format the external HD. I press "yes" on my remote and the message goes away.

Unfortunately, the cable box does not recognize the drive since my internal HD works OK but is still 90% filled.

Is there any trick to this?
