Transferred home videos to DVD and they won't play on my laptop

I bought a stand-alone VHS/DVD recorder combo for the purpose of transferring old home videos to DVD. The process was easy enough, and the discs play fine on the (same) DVD player.

When I insert a disc into my laptop drive, though, it asks me what I want to do with this blank disc. A look at the E drive shows, of course, no data on the disc.

Is there a way to overcome this? I guess I don't need to watch them on my laptop; I'm mostly just confused as to why this is happening.

Thanks,

Jon

Simplest question first: Did you finalize the DVD after recording?

Uh oh......

ummm.......finalize the DVD???

Is this done from the DVD recorder?

And would not doing this allow it to play in the stand-alone but not on my laptop?

Yes, it's done from the DVD recorder. It has to be finalized in order to play on other DVD players. It will play on the recorder without finalizing.

I don't know how yours works but mine is a Panasonic and has a menu selection that says "DVD management" and you can finalize from there.

I figured out how to do it from the manual, so all is good.

Thanks for the assist, Steve.
