How Soon until SD cards replace DVDs?

As I stroll through the store, I see more and more pre-loaded SD cards with TV shows or movies. That got me thinking. The more of those cards that get made, obviously, the cheaper they become. With 4Gb cards getting so much cheaper, it approaches the data capacity of a SD DVD. Why even bother with a disk at all? I don't know about 25 Gb cards, that may be a stretch, but two 16 Gb cards and you have a Blu-Ray movie in a very small, damage resistent package. Just a thought..... Wondering what everybody else thinks?

Re: How Soon until SD cards replace DVDs?

As a mechanism for downloading movies to rent from some sort of kiosk device, I suppose that's possible. For becoming the main method for distributing preloaded content, I don't see that ever happening, it's just so much cheaper to press a DVD. The major cost in a DVD is the intellectual property of the content, not the cost of pressing the disc.

The future IMO is no physical media for distribution, not new physical media. BD is likely the end of the road for discs we buy to own.
