Is it necessary to re-calibrate audio when switching DVD player ?
I recently switched my DVD player to the HD-A2, and the volume is noticeably lower. The old one used coaxial audio, and I'm using optical with the HD-A2. Is it just the different cable type? I didn't think switching players would affect audio levels. Thanks.

What receiver? Does it allow separate calibration by input and are you using the same input? No, it should not have changed levels and there should be more or less no difference between optical and coaxial, though I tend to use coaxial when given a choice.

I have the JVC RX-7030. It does not allow separate calibrations per input. I'm using 2 separate optical inputs on the receiver. The old DVD player used coaxial, but the HD-A2 only has optical.

Re: Is it necessary to re-calibrate audio when switching DVD player ?
Have you made any changes to the A2's digital audio configuration? Make sure that is setup correctly. Speaker level settings in the player do not apply to the digital out, so I am not sure why there would be a difference from one player to another, but I suppose it could be possible.

Re: Is it necessary to re-calibrate audio when switching DVD player ?
What do you mean by "digital audio configuration"? I set the digital output to "bitstream", HDMI "auto", Dialog enhancement "off", Dynamic Range control "off". I re-calibrated the audio last night. I used to listen to DTS DVD's at volume 24, and now I need to use 36(50% higher). It's sounds the same, it just doesn't make sense to me. Is it possible the new optical cable could be causing the reduced volume? I guess I'm concerned for no reason. Thanks.

You're not the only one--I too find that I need to crank the volume up a bit higher than what I usually crank it up to back when I had my Panny RP-82 DVD player connected to my Sony receiver. In all fairness though--I was using the coax optical out on the Panny...but am now forced to use optical out on the A2 since it has no coax out, so I should really recalibrate my speaker level settings first. Then again, my receiver does not offer per-input sound-level calibration--I used the receiver's built-in test tone generator to calibrate my speaker levels...therefore the resulting settings are fixed across all inputs...meaning that in theory I shouldn't need to recalibrate after having switched my DVD audio input from coax to optical.
One important thing that needs to be pointed out, based on what you said--since you're using optical out for your A2 digital audio (presumably because your receiver either does not have HDMI inputs or is not capable of accepting audio via HDMI), you need to set the HDMI setting on the A2 to "downmixed PCM" (I think that's what it's called) instead of "Auto" (the reason for doing so is discussed in the A2 manual); doing so should bring back some of the "lost" volume.
