Too Many Choices for my available space and outlets
I have three DVD options at the moment, a p4 computer which doubles as my hd receiver and dvr, my dvd player, and my xbox (not a 360) which I haven't hooked up yet. My current receiver is a Sony STR DE597 with 2 component inputs one can make use of digital coax the other the optical input. My TV is a 36" Sony about 10 years old but has 1 svideo and 1 component in. upgrading anything but the receiver is out of the question at the moment.
I have to keep the computer as one source. I currently use the svideo out to the TV but I have component out in the form of a breakaway box (the card is geforce 6200 agp 8x with 256 ddr2) I also run a diamond 7.1 soundcard with s/p dif out and analog 5.1. I use the svideo and 5.1 out because I only have one digital coax in on the recevier and I use that for the dvd player. I can play dvd's on this well enough unless I am dvr'ing a show which causes problems in the recording some times and god help me if I screw up one of my wife's shows.
My second option is philips dvd player which I really like because it does a good job with all of my burned disks including divx and mp3 filled dvd's (I like entire discographies on a single disk) I can't do either of those with the xbox. I use the component out and digital coax connected directly to my receiver. No optical out on the DVD player
Option three is use xbox which does have a third party optical option. I could hook it up he way everything is right now and be happy except I am lacking space and outlets especially if I buy a power amp to drive my rear speakers.
Any thoughts on set up? If i upgrade my receiver I am not going to have this problem since the receiver in question a Yamaha rx-n600 has more inputs for me, but I am still looking at $335 delivered that I would prefer to spend on other things, like actually being able to drive my 15" speakers. I am going to be spending a lot of time with this system over the next 2 to 3 years while I battle workers comp over another knee injury, so I am looking to make the most out of what I have.
