In need of advice

Hi,

Looking for a new DVD player that has the following options...
  • Upconverts to 1080p or 1080i
  • Digital Video Recorder (80G or higher)
  • Plays all or nearly all the DVD formats (DVD-R, DVD-RW, etc.)
  • HDMI output
  • Digital tuner

Not going with HD-DVD or Blu-Ray until the format war is over with.

Thanks

Your best bet would be the Philips DVDR3575H/37....It has pretty much everything you want and a 160GB HDD....plays both recordable DVD disc formats,CD and Divx,MP3,WMA and JPEG files.Has NTSC,ATSC and QAM tuners(although not widely known..).Upscales to 1080p with HDMI...Now the bad news...I was really interested in getting one of these until I started reading reviews about losing digital channels out of it's memory and it's lack of support for 16 X 9 encoded TV shows and only recording in SD.And the fact that a lot of them go back for repair/replacement.It's not bad priced at around $300 but you can buy a new HD Tivo for that price or less, although you have the monthly fee to deal with.I think the Philips machine has the right idea but it's not quite ready.I currently have one of the coveted Pioneer DVR-640's...It's a great machine but it's days are numbered because of a lack of a digital tuner.

Re: In need of advice

I tried the Phillips Recorder, it wouldn't even lock in the digitals stations after 4 attemps. Then regular DVD's wouldn't play and the disc got stuck in the machine. This was in the fist hour after I got it so I never did get to see all the features. This happened after I waited 3 weeks to just get the player.
