Re: Which OPPO to buy?
Get a 980H for the best overall bang for the buck, especially if passing SACD digital audio (DSD) to a receiver/processor will be important to you in the future. (Receivers and pre-pros with this capability are just now hitting the market.)
Get a 981HD if you want the best video quality (Faroudja DCDi), and can live without DSD over HDMI. DCDi usually yields the best video quality unless you are using a DLP display - that pairing can lead to "macroblocking" artifacts in some systems. Also note the 981HD doesn't have component outputs - you must use HDMI or DVI (in conjunction with a DVI-HDMI adapter).
The only unique feature of the 970HD is the 4-in-1 flash memory card reader (for digicam photo / MP3 playback). That would be the only reason to choose this model over the newer ones. A 980H is only $20 more than this player but offers much newer features (1080p, DSD over HDMI).
