Louis: to get at least a good basic set of image settings, if you have a THX mastered dvd (any of the Star Wars dvds for example) you can use what's called the "THX Optimizer" that is included on these discs:

It is easy to use, does not require one to know any special A/V language and only takes about 10 minutes to use. It can make a
significant difference in image quality, though at first you may think the picture is too dark but then you realize skin looks like skin, grass looks natural & not radioactive and blacks (depending on your TV) actually look black.
It also includes some fundamental audio test procedures too.
FYI: on my Star Wars disc, IIRC the optimizer is in the "Options" submenu and the icon for it usually very dimly lit for some reason (it changes randomly though!) so you'll have to look for it.
